I can't answer your last two questions (though, I suspect you can do 1080p via USB), but I have things to add to your original question: I have my PS3 at my parents' house, connected to an old SDTV. It's my only means of watching Netflix and Youtube on that television whenever I visit.

The only problem I do have is that sometimes those apps get a little finicky sometimes, as Netflix does when trying to switch accounts.
